Six-time European champions Liverpool have the knockout stage of this season’s Champions League in their sights ahead of the Group D clash with Atalanta. Liverpool play hosts to the Italians at Anfield on Wednesday night knowing that a win will guarantee qualification for the knockout stage with two games to spare.
Liverpool are one of the clubs with unblemished record in the competition this season. The Reds have won all their three games in Group D without conceding a single goal and that has put them in a fantastic position to secure their place in the next stage of the competition. Apart from Liverpool, other European heavyweights like Barcelona, Manchester City and Bayern Munich also have a perfect record in their respective groups.
Liverpool started their Champions League campaign with an impressive 1-0 win over Dutch champions Ajax Amsterdam away from home. The victory from matchday 1 was followed by another win on matchday 2 as they beat Danish champions FC Midtjylland 2-0 at home courtesy goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool then made it three victories in a row as far as their Group D campaign is concerned. The Reds made light work of a potentially tough away trip to Bergamo to face Atalanta. Liverpool won emphatically as they scored five unreplied goals against their opponents.
Portuguese international Diogo Jota was the star of the show after the £45m summer signing scored three goals during the matchday 3 duel with Atalanta. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane also scored to make it a comprehensive 5-0 away victory for the Reds who are looking to win the competition for the second time in three seasons after their 2018/19 triumph.
Liverpool will qualify for the next stage if they beat Atalantairrespective of what happens in the other group game between Ajax Amsterdam and Midtjylland.
